On Monday, February 8, 2021, #PGFD crews returned to the scenes of the past weekend’s fire incidents to knock on doors, check smoke alarms, and install smoke alarms where needed. Returning to the neighborhoods of the single fire fatality in Beltsville, of the house fire in Riverdale where two of our firefighters were burned, and of the garage fire which spread to a home in Clinton was invaluable. The opportunity allows our crew to have one-on-one conversations with our residents about the importance of smoke alarms and overall fire safety which can be difficult when we are on the scene of working incidents. Please take this moment to check your own smoke alarms and please keep the following in mind:
- Update your battery-only operated smoke alarms with 10-year sealed-in battery smoke alarms
- Working smoke alarms should be located on every level of the home, in each sleeping area, and outside each sleeping room
- Test smoke alarms monthly
- Create a home escape safety plan. Designate a meeting place outside and practice the plan with everyone who lives in your home
- Close your bedroom doors before you go to sleep
- If there is a fire and you are able to exit safely, stay out
- Call 911 immediately

If you are in a situation where you are unable to pay for and/or install a smoke alarm in your home, please call 311 to request a smoke alarm. Your request will be reviewed based on need, if approved, your request will be sent out for a COVID-safe installation.
