Just after 0130, units from Beltsville, Laurel, Burtonsville and Chief 31 A acting as Battlation Chief 886 were alerted to respond to the 3100 block of I-95 highway for an accident with entrapment involving a tractor-trailer. Units arrived on scene to find a tractor-trailer that had rear-ended a stopped construction vehicle. A construction worker was standing next to the construction vehicle when it was struck. The worker subsequently suffered from a trauma-arrest while the driver of the tractor trailer remained pinned inside of the cab of his truck.

Units operated on scene for about an hour to free the driver of the tractor trailer. The construction worker succumbed to his injuries while the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

It is suspected that the driver of the tractor-trailer fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the accident. Remember that tired driving is the same as drunk driving. Think twice before putting yourself and others at risk. If you are tired or feel yourself nodding off, pull off the road and get some rest. It may just save your life or someone else's.
